FSU Rugby Stays Unbeaten

The Florida State women's rugby team isn't quite the power it was during the 1980s, when the Seminoles won three consecutive national titles. But rebuilding shouldn't be a difficult task for coach Colleen Fahey's club.

You couldn't tell from last weekend's victory that this is a team that still has a lot of work to do. The Lady Seminoles shut out the University of Florida 27-0 to extended its unbeaten streak to 4-0-1. Kristen Ludlam scored three times to lead the FSU offense.

What FSU is achieving with a young squad is raising a lot of eyebrows.

"We are having to start over with many rookies and people who have never played before, but they are very eager to learn," said Fahey, who played on two of the national championship teams. "They like the physical and mental challenge of learning the new sport."

FSU will play a handful of tournaments through the fall season before making a run for the collegiate title during the spring. The team plays in the collegiate bracket of the Florida Rugby Union and is one of three Florida schools that play the circuit.
