--- Often Asked Questions ---

How is NSCS different from other organizations on campus?

NSCS recognizes that a college campus provides many opportunities for students to become involved. NSCS is an organization that recognizes students who do well academically during the most difficult period of transitioning from high school to college. Once you are a member, NSCS provides opportunities to become involved and make a difference.

What are the criteria to be a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars?

NSCS is a first- and second-year student organization. We recognize that many students arrive at college with AP Credit and these students are eligible to join during the first or second year of their college experience. Once you are a third- or fourth-year student you are no longer eligible to join. Students who join NSCS, though, are lifetime members and can be active throughout their college experience. You must have a minimum of a 3.4 grade point average, to which you are then invited to join the organization. If you are NOT invited you can go to the national website at www.nscs.org and apply or nominate yourself to join.

How many chapters are there?

Currently, we have active chapters on over 148 campuses. They include The George Washington University, where we were chartered in 1994, the University of California-Berkeley, Northwestern, Cornell, UCLA, Dartmouth, Boston College, the University of Virginia and Duke. We are currently working to charter on additional campuses to provide more students with the opportunity to be a part of NSCS.

How do I find out if I am an active member?

To find out if you are an active member, you must first pay your one time membership fee of $60 and you are a member for a lifetime. But if you are receiving local e mails from the FSU Chapter, and e mails from the National Office, then you are an active member. To be recognized as an active member with in the Florida State Chapter you have to attend events that are sponsored and co sponsored by our organization. You will get updates on events that we are participating in, with the time and location of the events, all you need to do is e mail Mona Sawani at Pistonsgal@yahoo.com to let her know you would like to attend. As an active member of NSCS at FSU, you are allowed only one semester of inactivity within your undergraduate membership. As a senior, however, you must have two consecutive semesters of active participation ending in the semester in which you graduate. If there is more than one semester of inactivity, you must present a reason why to the Executive Board, and they will review everything on a case-by-case basis and make a judgment. The reason for a point system is to reward active participation in the NSCS at FSU. All benefits of the organization will be evaluated according to your classification as active or inactive.

When are the meetings?

The general meetings are on the second and fourth Thursday of every month except for holidays and exam week. The location is Dodd Hall room 101 at 7:00PM. If there are any changes to the date, time, or location everyone should receive an email stating the changes.

Can anyone come to the events?

When it comes to activities that NSCS puts on everyone is invited to come out and support the organization and give back to the community. If it is a special event, and we specifically say we need you to RSVP, that usually means to limit the amount of people you bring. Otherwise we are an organization that wants the whole campus to benefit and take part of. Anyone can come to the community service events.

Can I still go to the events if I don’t have a car?

Normally we will provide a carpool system if there is a need for it. If you tell one of the executive board members you need a ride to and from the events we will look into arranging transportation for you.
