Alpha Delta Pi was founded in 1851 at Wesleyan Female College in Macon, GA. It holds the distinction of being the first secret society in the world for college women. The original name for the sorority was the "Adelphean Society." Adelphean is derived from the Greek word meaning "sister." The name changed to Alpha Delta Phi in 1905 and then to Alpha Delta Pi in 1913. The basic principles and ritual are much the same as those developed by our founders.

Our founders, pictured above (L-R) were Eugenia Tucker Fitzgerald, Ella Pierce Turner, Octavia Andrew Rush, Mary Evans Glass, Sophronia Woodruff Dews, and Elizabeth Williams Mitchell (not pictured).  These young women were very special to even have the privilege of attending college, especially Wesleyan, which was the first chartered college for women in the world.  Eugenia, the acknowledged leader of the Adelpheans, was chosen their first president.  Within two weeks of the founding of the Adelphean Society by these six ladies, they were joined by 13 others to form the first chapter of the Adelphean Society.  It is interesting to note that at the time these young women went to college, they were only 14 or 15 years old.  That just makes their vision of forming a secret society for women even more remarkable.  These young ladies paved the way for all other sororities and millions of other sorority women across the world.

The History of the Iota Chapter at Florida State University

Iota is the chapter name of Alpha Delta Pi here at Florida State University. We received the name Iota at the time of our chapter's founding on January 16, 1909. Our chapter was the ninth in the country to be founded and Iota isthe ninth letter in the Greek alphabet. Alpha Delta Pi was the third national sorority on FSU's campus and our chapter house was built in 1932. We are a member of the Alpha IV province along with Jacksonville University and the University of Central Florida.

Colors

Azure Blue and White are the official colors of Alpha Delta Pi. Blue is symbolic of friendship, the basic spirit upon which Alpha Delta Pi is founded. White symbolizes sincerity and truth. Alpha Delta Pi seeks sincerity and truthfulness in all its members.

Motto

We Live For Each Other

Mascot

The lion is the mascot of Alpha Delta Pi. Our mascot is nicknamed "Alphie."

Flower

The Woodland Violet, which grows wild, is the official Alpha Delta Pi flower. Because it is unavailable for purchase, African violets are often used to symbolize the Woodland Violet.

Badge

Our badge is gold with a black enamel center.  The Greek letters "ADP", two stars, and clasped hands are the symbols on the badge.  The badge is the outward, visible symbol or our lifetime loyalty to Alpha Delta Pi. The first badge was worn by the Adelpheans in 1851. The badge has undergone many changes over the years. Every initiate is required to pay for the cost of her badge. The correct way to wear the badge is over the heart with no other pin (fraternity or honorary) placed above it. The badge should never be worn on a blazer or jacket and never with casual clothes. Only initiated members are allowed to wear the badge.

Coat Of Arms

The original Coat of Arms was designed by Elizabeth Moseley Coles and Agnes Chapman. Symbolism from our ritual and our Alpha pin were combined in the Coat of Arms and the design originally had a background of violets. In 1919 the Convention body voted to make changes and the present design was accepted. Alpha members are not permitted to wear the sorority Coat of Arms in any form, or to have any articles bearing it. ONLY initiated members are entitled to this privilege.
