The Florida State University is pleased to host the Black Graduate Student Orientation Program (formerly, Summer Minority Graduate Orientation Program). Pending funding by the Florida Legislature, twenty-five scholarships are awarded to first-time black graduate students who will be entering FSU in the Fall semester of each academic year . Students must be officially admitted to the university for consideration.

The program is held three weeks prior to the start of the Fall semester on the beautiful campus of the Florida State University. Each participant receives a $1,300.00 stipend to defer the cost of travel, food, and housing during their participation in the program.

The purpose of the program is to enhance the retention and academic performance of black graduate students at the Florida State University. Specifically, the orientation program will:

  1. provide students with individualized, discipline-specific academic and career advisement, as well as information on requirements and expectations in their department and the graduate school
  2. acquaint students with the basic survival skills required for comfortable adjustment to graduate life culture
  3. introduce students to specific departmental protocol necessary for success in their program of study - particularly in matters of financial aid, research skills and other academic opportunities.
  4. familiarize students with available university and departmental resources, key personnel, support networks, and the means to access them
  5. familiarize students with the campus environment, the Tallahassee community and its resources
  6. acquaint students with discipline-specific research skills and methods
  7. put students in contact with fellow minority graduate students and organizations, minority graduates of Florida State University, minority administrators and faculty at FSU
