Q: How many students are enrolled at FSU?
You will find about 41,000 total students at FSU, representing all 50 states and 129 countries. There are 31,600 undergraduates (including approximately 6,600 freshman) and 8,500 graduate students. Of the total student body, 56% are female, 44% male, and 24.8% minority.
Q: What is your student/teacher ratio?
Approximately 21:1, but you probably want to know how big classes will be. Typically you have some big lecture classes during your first two years of general studies (e.g. biology for non-majors), but 85% of our classes have fewer than 50 students.
Q: If I am admitted to FSU, does that guarantee I'll be able to study any major I want?
No, FSU does have some limited access Undergraduate programs to which students must apply separately. Freshman and lower division transfers may apply for Dance, Film, Music, and the BFA Theatre programs. Upper division transfers may apply for Business, Computer Science, Communication, Nursing, and Psychology, after completing certain prerequisites. All transfer students must meet the Degree Mapping "milestone" requirements for their major.
Q: What majors do you offer?
With over 200 majors, FSU offers something for everyone. Check out our complete list of majors here. You may notice that we do not offer majors in journalism or architecture. Many students are planning for careers in these areas, though, by majoring in the following programs: interior design and civil engineering for future architecture, and English and communication for future journalists.
Q: What unusual or unique majors do you offer?
Actuarial Science, Entrepreneurship, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (Graduate), Information Technology, Meteorology, Professional Golf Management, Russian and East European Studies.
Q: Do you have pre-med?
FSU offers pre-professional advising that will prepare you for graduate study in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, optometry, etc. Generally speaking, students interested in the pre-medical advising track major in some kind of empirical science, but they are certainly not limited to those majors.
Q: What about pre-law?
FSU offers the traditional history/political science track and also offers more contemporary pre-law academic tracks such as Criminology/Criminal Justice, Psychology, and Sociology for criminal law preparation; Biological Sciences for environmental or medical law; speech communications for trial law; Business, Economics, and Accounting for corporate law; and International Relations for international law. A number of our English and Philosophy majors enroll in law school as well.
FSU's graduate law students benefit from our location in the capital city where most of the state's major law firms have offices, and the State Supreme Court is a block away from the FSU Law School.
Q: Do you offer any other professional or pre-professional programs?
Yes - Accounting, Business, Education, Engineering, Pre-Ministry, Nursing, etc.
Q: Do you have an honors program?
Yes, approximately ten percent of the entering freshman class are invited into the University Honors Program based upon their high school GPA and test performance. A separate application is required; all accepted students are considered automatically to be invited to apply. Honors students have priority registration access to special classes, extracurricular activities, and an honors residence hall.
