Minimum University Admission Requirements
These are minimum requirements established by the State of Florida. In
many cases, departmental requirements exceed these—so don't forget
to check with your department.
The Basics
- Have, or be a candidate for, a baccalaureate degree from an accredited
college or university.
- Be in good standing at the institution of higher learning last attended.
- Present evidence by official transcripts of a satisfactory prior academic
record (at least a 3.0 G.P.A. on a 4.0 scale as an upper division undergraduate
student or at least a 3.0 G.P.A. on a master's degree from an accredited
institution) or have a minimum score of 1000 on the combined verbal and
quantitative portions of the Graduate Record Examinations General Test
(applicants to the College of Business are required to submit scores
from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) in lieu of the Graduate
Record Examination).
- Submit official GRE/GMAT scores. The official scores must be received
directly from the Educational Testing Service by the Office of Admissions.
- Be approved by the department.
Additional Considerations
- All records, including academic records from other institutions, become
part of the official file and cannot be returned to the student or duplicated
for any purpose.
- Graduate School Admissions at Florida State University is both limited
and competitive. It is imperative that you apply early and be sure that
all transcripts and test scores are sent directly to the Office of Admissions
before the appropriate deadline.
- Special admission consideration may be requested based on disability
(official documentation is required).
- Before permission to enroll can be granted, every new student must
complete a health history questionnaire to be kept on file in the Thagard
Health Center. It is important to note that proof of immunization to
measles and rubella is required. The health history form is included
in the official acceptance packet mailed to the student.
General University Deadlines

Departmental application deadlines may be earlier than University deadlines.
You should confirm these deadlines with the academic department before
applying. The University also reserves the right to close admission earlier
if warranted by enrollment limitations and the quantity and quality of
applicants.
Two steps
Admission to graduate study at the University is a two-step process.
- Decision. The department or school in which the applicant
expects to study determines admissibility to their program.
- Notification. Official notification of admission may
only be issued by the Office of Admissions.
