Summary of Proposed University Regulation 6C2-3.0015,
Student Organizations and Activities

SUMMARY OF PROPOSED UNIVERSITY REGULATION 6C2-3.0015, STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS AND ACTIVITIES
Proposed FSU Regulation 6C2-3.0015, Student Organizations and Activities, outlines the registration process, privileges, and expectations of organized student groups at Florida State University. The regulation, in its current form as a rule in the Florida Administrative Code, has not been revised since 1986. It references administrative offices and positions that are no longer active at Florida State University, as well as antiquated language and systems that are not consistent with current departmental procedures related to student life and activity.

The intent of proposed regulation is to update and modify the recognition procedures so that all “student organizations”, including Social Greek, academic, student governance, and special interest, ;are afforded the same resources and privileges – and are held to the same expectations – as they conduct business on behalf of their student organization. The current rule language does not allow for some of these groups to gain recognition through the university process, excluding them from resources yet also making it more difficult to provide consistent training and education that will lead them to success. By expanding the recognition privileges, we are also better able to support the faculty/staff advisor by providing them with training and resources to support student initiatives and facilitate communication, collaboration and leadership learning.

The new language more clearly articulates the relationship that student organizations have with the university and provides specific requirements for membership and officer eligibility. These additions will elevate the quality and level of service these groups provide to the university and surrounding communities. This new language also firmly establishes the Student Activities Center of the Oglesby Union, on behalf of the Vice President for Student Affairs, as the designee for designing and implementing the student organization recognition process annually. While they have been the office facilitating this process for many years, the language in the current rule was not reflective of this practice.
