The weekend Today Show hosted by Jack Ford and Jodi Applegate presented a segment on August 1, 1998 about the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience. Jack Ford and Bob Myers (Executive Producer) did a superb job on the segment. Jack Ford's interviews with George Langford and Jean Bishop were very emotional and brought out the realities of their families' World War II experiences.

"World War II: Recognition and Remembrance"

February 24, 2000
Tallahassee Civic Center

Connie Haines, Tex Beneke, and the Music of World War II

A special tribute to the music and memories of World War II. The last of the original Big Band stars from that era, Connie Haines and Tex Beneke, will perform songs from yesteryear.

Connie Haines has dazzled audiences around the world, including four command performances at the White House for Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Ronald Reagan and George Bush.  She has co-starred with Frank Sinatra, while performing with the Harry James and Tommy Dorsey bands.

Tex Beneke was a member of the most popular big band of the World War II era, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and has continued to play saxophone throughout the years.

For this tribute, Beneke, Haines and accompanying musicians and singers will recall the very special music of the 1940s. With the revival of swing and swing dancing, this event will provide fun for all ages.

The exhibit hall will have displays of World War II military vehicles, photos, posters, uniforms, and more. The exhibits will be hosted by a volunteer organization of veterans on hand to explain and elaborate on the human experience of war.

The event is co-sponsored by FSU's Institute on World War II and the Human Experience. The Institute is dedicated to preserving the memories and artifacts of the World War II Generation. An important part of this mission is the preservation of diaries and letters which provide unparalleled insight into the everyday experiences of that era. Researchers and historians will be available to answer questions about how items may be contributed to the Institute.
