A noted macro economist in the Keynesian tradition, he was a prolific writer of some six books and 70 articles. Colleagues described Dr. Gapinski as the ideal professor: a fine colleague, a superb researcher, a talented writer, and a great teacher. He served with distinction on a variety of university, College of Social Sciences and department committees. DIANNE PARMER SMITHDianne Parmer Smith, an employee of Florida State for 16 years who was named Humanitarian of the Year in 1996, died Nov. 16. Mrs. Smith, executive assistant to the vice president of research and then to the vice president of the FSU Research Foundation, was cited in 1996 for representing "the very essence of the humanitarian ideal." While she was fighting her own cancer battle and helping other survivors, Mrs. Smith brought to campus a "can-do attitude, along with her signature smile and kind word," according to Robert Johnson, who was vice president for research. Mrs. Smith was a native of Wetumpka, Ala. She graduated from Clearwater High School in 1963 and was a mermaid at Weeki Wachi Springs for two years. Throughout her life she served in many civic and church organizations. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Florida State University Credit Union from 1993-1999. She was a member and leader of the Tallahassee Church of God. |
