Kenneth Kent, well known to sports fans
Kenneth K. Kent, 81, who collected tickets for many years at Florida
State football and baseball games, died August 1.
Mr. Kent was an army veteran of World War II.
He was an accountant with the state of Florida and a member of the First
Baptist Church and the Tallahassee Elks Club.
He was a native of Durant, Oklahoma, but lived in Tallahassee for many
years.
He had worked with the Florida State University ticket office since the
1940s.
Mathematics professor James Andrews

Professor James J. Andrews of the FSU mathematics department died July
28, 1998.
He was born on March 18, 1930, in Seneca Falls, N. Y., and received an
A.B. in mathematics from Hofstra College, and a Ph.D. in mathematics from
the University of Georgia .
He was a research associate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and
then taught at the University of Georgia, the University of Wisconsin and
Florida State.
In the summers of 1965 and 1967, he did research in cryptology at the
Institute for Defense Analysis, Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif.
He was an expert in higher-dimensional knot theory, the topology of manifolds,
and applications of group theory to the topology of manifolds. He was best
known for the "Andrews-Curtis Conjecture," formulated in a paper
in 1965 which he wrote with Morton Curtis, then a mathematics professor
at FSU. This conjecture was a seminal observation in topology, and the hunt
for its solution continues to stimulate mathematics research to this day.
Jim Andrews was known for his sense of humor and generosity with time
and ideas when working with graduate students.
