He lives well, travels, learns - and helps students
do the same
Herb Rand, 79, was in a "happy glow" as a child. He says the
sun in the morning was "just great to me."
The same size as in high school (175 pounds), the tall, white-haired,
bearded and cheerful soul has a flair for living that many people search
for their whole lives.
But Rand wants to give away something else. Though he managed to do
very well with education, work and marriage, he is still not happy that
he had no career counseling and now he's given FSU $100,000 to produce
more counselors for the next generation.

Distance Learning at FSU
When FSU decided to be a pioneer in the newest way of learning
by distance it was natural to hook up with the expert in the English-speaking
world.
So now there's a partnership with the Open University of the United
Kingdom, which taught by distance from Milton Keynes, England, for almost
30 years.
The 4,000 miles between the universities doesn't matter.

FSU research is on radio and television
There's gold in research, and FSU officials want everyone to know it.
Like the Greek mathematician Archimedes, who shouted "Eureka!"
when he discovered a way to determine the purity of gold, university researchers
hope a radio and television show by that name will say as much to those
who tune in.

Race influences womens' body images
Jane, trying on a pair of size 12 jeans, stands before the three-way
mirror in the department store dressing room, grimacing as she casts a glance
over her shoulder.
"My stomach sticks out, my thighs are too fat, my buttocks too
big," she complains, resolving once again to go back to fasting and
diet pills until she's a "perfect" size 10.
Joan, just a few feet away, slides into a size 14 pair of jeans. "Oh
girl, looking good," Joan smiles to herself. "This is just the
thing to wear to that party."
