Turbulent times for CPE
1970: Student activists create CPE, the first student government
agency, with one desk, an unpaid director, 12 classes
1971: State legislator W.D. Barrows calls for investigation of CPE;
CPE required to submit all classes to FSU president for approval; CPE instructor
"Radical Jack" Lieberman suspended for teaching a course on revolution,
joins ACLU in suit against FSU; Lieberman reinstated but CPE loses case
in federal court.
1977: Autonomy of CPE threatened by student government president;
CPE sponsors successful recall drive that forces his resignation.
1981: State legislators Alan Trask and Tom Bush introduce amendment
cutting off state money to universities that allow groups or individuals
to advocate sex between unmarried persons; FSU asks CPE instructors to sign
"sexual loyalty oath"; Issue debated on Donahue ; State Supreme
Court declares Trask/Bush amendment unconstitutional.
