Miss Pearl thought school was heaven

When Pearl Tyner entered the Florida State College for Women in 1926, she waited tables in the school cafeteria to help offset the cost of tuition. For a girl from Piney Woods, it was a different world.

"When we got here, and saw the mowed lawns and the trimmed shrubbery, and all the wonderful people; well, we thought we had gone to heaven-or at least next door,"she said.

She says she wanted to give something back, and she has: an eminent scholar chair, endowed scholarships and now, a gift of $1 million, including the state dollar-for-dollar match, for academic space at University Center.

FSU thanked her in pre-game ceremonies at the FSU-North Carolina State football game at Doak Campbell Stadium on Sept.16.

The University Center tower bearing the FSU seal has been named for her in recognition of her dedication to FSU and her lifetime commitment to education.
