Carey M. Drayton, director of public safety at the University of Oregon, will succeed Bill Tanner as Florida State University's Chief of Police.
Following a nationwide search for a successor to Tanner, who retired in August
1994 after 35 years as chief, Vice President John Carnaghi has selected Drayton
to become the second police chief in the history of Florida State.
Drayton, 34, a graduate of the University of Southwestern Louisiana, received his police training at the Acadiana Law Enforcement Training Academy and the FBI National Academy.
Since December 1990, Drayton has been in charge of campus security, environmental health and safety, and parking at the University of Oregon in Eugene. His background includes service as director of University Police/assistant director of Public Safety and assistant to the Dean of Student Services at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Lafayette.
At 26, Drayton was the youngest police chief ever in the state of Louisiana. His law enforcement experience also includes service as a police officer at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
At Florida State, Drayton will direct a department with 56 sworn officers and 23 support staff and an operating budget of approximately $2.5 million per year.
