Dr. Peter Easton

Associate Professor | 114-H Stone Building | (850) 644-8165 | peaston@fsu.edu

Peter Easton was born a few years back but once out of college took a left (or was it right?) turn and joined the Peace Corps -- and was assigned to adult literacy programs in the Republic of Niger. He was slated to stay there two years but ended up staying seven , when you include a year's extension in the Peace Corps and four more working in technical assistance with training in agricultural cooperatives and markets.
Upon return to the US, Easton tried his hand at graduate study but only made it through the MA (in Education) at Stanford University before getting tired of the academic routine and skipping out to do some political work and to employ himself in home construction. Another stint back in Africa, this time to evaluate adult education programs for the World Bank, ended with his biting the bullet and returning to graduate school for an MS in Economics and the PhD in Educational Planning at Florida State Universeity. While moving, not to say laboring, through his degree program, Easton spent another few years consulting in training and international development before entering on an academic position at the ripe old age of.. call it his mid-40s, with a joint appointment in Adult Education and International Development Education in the FSU College of Education.
He has written two books on evaluation of adult and nonformal education -- one in French and one in English -- and numerous articles and reports in one language or the other on the linkages between training programs and labor markets as well as the realms of local development and democratization. Two of his current research interests are the dynamics of local capacity building in developing countries and culturally-relevant forms of transformative adult learning.
