Program Description


Sociocultural and International Development Education Studies (SIDES) is designed to prepare individuals to assume leadership roles in education who can:

  • conduct issue-or policy-oriented research or field work regarding the role of education in the development process,
  • critically evaluate research and practice related to education and development,
  • use research findings and field experience to formulate relevant educational policy,
  • design educational programs that will contribute to national and regional development.
Graduates serve in universities, ministries of education, philanthropic foundations and development agencies overseas or in the U.S. International graduates return to their countries to work in policy and research related activities in evaluation and planning departments, educational research and development institutes, or universities. They also return to project-level programs as administrators, curriculum specialists and program evaluators. American graduates who work in the U.S. become involved in educational and socially relevant research or development activities. American graduates with international experience usually work with international agencies, philanthropic organizations, universities, or with foreign governments in areas related to research and development. Our graduates are well-suited for positions that involve a blend of practice and theory, and require a combination of skills in an educational specialty and in one or more of the social sciences. international
international The SIDES program's academic and professional mission is to conduct scholarly and critical inquiry into education and its relationship to the social, economic, cultural, political and historical context. This program provides grounding in the economics, social, cultural and political dimensions of education and development, in-depth training in one or more of the social science disciplines (anthropology, economics, political science, sociology, gender studies, communications, public administration, urban and regional planning, etc.), and a professional specialization in one or more areas of educational practice (program evaluation, educational planning, policy analysis, adult education, higher education, administration, instructional design, etc.).


Students negotiate their programs individually with their advisor. In addition to the program requirements, students must fulfill FSU requirements for residency, dissertation or thesis hours and the like.
