The Journal: October 31, 2007

 

The meeting of the 60th Student Senate was called to order at 7:32 p.m. by Student Senate President Nathasha Cole.

 Senator Gardner led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.

 Moment of Silent Reflection:

Special Introductions and Announcements: Nydia Simon, Teach for America representative, told the Senate that there are 13 million children that live in poverty and only half of those will graduate and their reading skills will be very low. She urged the Senators to join in the struggle by getting involved in the movement, so that all children in this great nation will have an opportunity to get a good education.

Messages from the Executive Branch: Student Body Vice President Clifford Counts announced that the first Town Hall Meeting for the Fall semester will be on Wednesday, November 7 at 6:00 p.m. in the State Ballroom. He thanked everyone who attended President Wetherell’s pizza party: the food was great and the house was amazing. He also announced that there will be an Aramark focus group meeting on November 15, and Freshmen and Sophomores are encouraged to attend. Counts said there is a voter registration competition with the University of Florida and on November 14, there will be a campus wide initiative to get students to register and vote. He also mentioned to the Senate that it will take 7 million dollars to rebuild the Thagard Student Health Center and there might be a $2 per credit hour tax from the students to do this: he will meet with Dr. Coburn to discuss this issue.  Counts told the Senate that there has been a memo sent to all departments concerning the Tech Fee tax the university is putting on the students, and since there are no students on this committee he is seeking to have the membership of the committee to have one-half students and one-half staff. He asked the Senate to support Resolution 3 supporting traffic on Tennessee Street. He told the Senate to look out for  extended library hours in the future. Senate President Cole told the Senate that it is mandatory that they show up for the Town Hall Meeting.

Messages from Agency and Bureau Directors, and SGA Organization Officers and Employees: Dr. Joyce Howard announced that there will be an image meeting on Wednesday, November 7, at 4 p.m. in 311 B Union. She passed out passes for American Gangster sneak preview.  Troy Irwin, ICS Director, told the Senate that he wants to educate everyone concerning Che Rivera because his legend has been romanticized and people don’t know any better: so to explain what Che is really about they have a speaker coming in on Tuesday, November 6 at 8 p.m. in the New Classroom Building.

Messages from the Congress of Graduate Students: None.

Messages from the Senior Class Council: Nydia Simon, Class President, announced that there is a Senior Showcase on next Wednesday in the Ballroom form 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will have free food, class rings orders, cap and gown orders and Teach for America information.

Messages from the Judicial Branch: Chief Justice Bishins told the Senate that they have new rules and you can see him to get a copy.

Messages from the Union Board: None.

Messages from Campus Recreation: Adam Fox announced that there next meeting is on Friday, at 2:30 p.m. in room 311 A, the Grads Made Good Room.  He said he will bring the Board by next week to meet the Senate.

Report of the Student Body Auditor: As of October 23, 2007, Senate  Projects is $14,700.00.

Committee Reports:                   

Student Affairs-Chairman Toole announced that the committee will meet on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in the Senate Office. She said the committee discussed getting a newsletter and an organization directory and possibly a Senate Social.

Budget-The committee discussed the future of BSAC and there was no official business discussed.

Finance-As reported in the Calendar. There was a motion by Senator Guiddy to go into Committee of the Whole for Bill 3, the motion passed. The Senate debated and passed this bill out of committee. There was a motion by Senator N. Thompson to make the decision of the committee the decision of the Senate. The motion was withdrawn.

Judiciary-Chairman Entine told the Senate that the committee is working on the Elections Code and Chapter 509, the Office of the General Counsel.

Internal Affairs-The Senate interviewed and passed Drew Hall for ILS Financial Officer, Anh Chau for Asian American Student Union Assistant Director, Courtney Laster for Secretary of Women’s Affairs, Carolyn Nashei for Secretary of Multicultural Affairs, Sara Maoblem for Underclassmen Council Secretary, Gary Uzonyi for ICS Board of Directors and Robert Jubukik for MARC Board of Directors.

Bill 1 - Sponsored by Senator Cutler. A revision of $4,000.00 within the Pride Student Union from Contractual Services to Expense. Purpose: to restructure the PSU budget to account for the operating costs associated with the LGBTQ Student Resource Center. REFERRED TO FINANCE.

Bill 2 - Sponsored by Senator Cutler. A revision of $500.00 within the Pride Student Union from Contractual Services to Food. Purpose: to restructure the PSU budget to account for the operating costs associated with the LGBTQ Student Resource Center. REFERRED TO FINANCE.  

Bill 5 - Sponsored by Senators Goins, N. Thompson, R. Thompson, Dawson and Howard. A revision to the Student Body Statutes Chapter 805.5. Purpose: to add contractual services to the Finance Code. REFERRED TO FINANCE.

Bill 6 - Sponsored by Senator Harrison. A revision to the Student Body Statutes Chapter 412.1. Purpose: to codify the requirements for amending the Sweepings and Central Reserves bills. REFERRED TO JUDICIARY AND SWEEPINGS COMMITTEE.

Bills Second Reading:

Bill 3 - Sponsored by Senators Dawson, Guiddy and Loe. An allocation of $650.00 from Senate Projects to All Night Yahtzee Expense. Purpose: to fund the group’s travel for the A.N.Y. performance. PASSED. YES-39, NO-6.

Bill 4 - Sponsored by Senator Harrison. An allocation of $3,552.00 from Senate Projects to Strozier Library. Purpose: to fund the extended hours in Strozier Library and the Union Computer Labs for exam week Fall 2007. PASSED WITHOUT OBJECTION.

Constitutional Amendments: None.

Resolutions:

Resolution 1 -  Sponsored by Senator Toole.

Subject: Amending the Rules of Procedure Rule 7.05, the Student Affairs Committee.

PASSED.

Resolution 2 -  Sponsored by Senator Freelove.

Subject: Requiring that the vice chair of a committee shall serve six (6) weeks in Senate prior to assuming the chair.

Resolution 3 -  Sponsored by the 60th Student Senate.

Subject: Asking that safety features are put along Tennessee Street between Dewey and Copeland.

New Business: Senators Emilien and Sokos were appointed to the Office of Legislative Affairs Board.

Closing Announcements: Senate Entine announced that Rambo’s new movie open on January 25, 2008. Senator Hamilton announced that the Off Campus Housing Fair takes place on Tuesday, November 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Senator Fasano announced that Bryan Hall is celebrating its 100th anniversary on Monday from 4:30 - 7 p.m. with alumni and faculty. Senator Sokos said that the Board of Trustees passed the tech fee and the hours of the library will be extended. Senator Toole wished Senators Mariea and Harrison Happy Birthday. Senator Freelove asked the Senators to join the Facebook group “the 60th Student Senate”. Senator Frady announced that he will be in Boston this weekend with the FSU team and they take on Boston College. Senate Pro Tempore Kushner said there will be a 15 minute training session next week and he is bringing in speakers. Senate President Cole congratulated Senator Entine on the being the runner up for Homecoming Chief and she thanked everyone who attended President Wetherell’s pizza party.  She told the Senate that next week’s town hall

meeting is mandatory. Cole told the Senate that we need a parliamentarian. She also asked the Senators to please read the resolutions and bills before coming to Senate and please do not stifle debate.
