The Journal: November 28, 2007

 

The meeting of the 60th Student Senate was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Student Senate President Nathasha Cole.

Senator Slade led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Student Comments: James T. Harmen, World Affairs Program, announced to the Senate that they won the first place delegation award. He thanked Senate for their support. Jared Lord announced that there will be the second annual Organization Fair and “stress buster” on the Landis Green during finals week. A.J. Jones announced that Multicultural Greek Council is having a Bar-B-Q on December 1, from 2-4 p.m.

Special Introductions and Announcements: None.

Messages from the Executive Branch: Clifford Counts, Student Body Vice President told the Senate that Strozier Library will be open 24 hours a day except on Friday and Saturday nights, and President T.K. Wetherell is responsible for this. He said that the first floor of the library is being renovated also. Counts said that he, President Joe O’Shea and Chief of Staff Sara Sokola are trying to convince the student body to build a new health center and also to build something in addition to the Leach Center. He said that he would have to ask the Board of Trustees to increase the fees in order to get the new building.  Counts asked the Senate to support the resolution coming up next week concerning this issue. Chief of Staff Sara Sokola announced that the Aramark focus group will meet tomorrow at 5 p.m. She told the Senate that the Health Fair on today was very successful. She said that FSU beat UF in the voter registration drive and they will take the trophy to UF and take a picture of their Student Body President and Vice President kissing FSU’s mascot.  Sokola announced that there will be a holiday party on next Wednesday.

Messages from Agency and Bureau Directors, and SGA Organization Officers and Employees: Jose Requena, HLSU Director, announced that they are having a “No Halba English” debate/discussion at 7 p.m. in the Claude Pepper Auditorium, and they will discuss if English should be the only language in the United States.  He also announced that they will have a potluck with the Black Student Union and COBOL on December 4, in the University Ballroom at 7 p.m. He passed out the November issue of their newsletter. Requena congratulated the new brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha.  Keenan Mahoney, IRHC Assistant Director, announced that they had elections on Monday and all of the officers are the same except for they have a new secretary for DeGraff Hall. Monique Velasquez, AASU Director announced that they will have their last general assembly meeting on December 6, in room 215.  She also announced that Asian Awareness Month is March 2008.

Messages from the Union Board: Brittany announced that on Friday, November 30, there will be an AIDS Day in the Union Ballroom. She also announced that Pride Student Union will have a Drag Show at 8:30 p.m. on  Friday and Friday will also be the last Breakfast 4 A Buck for the semester. She told the Senate that they met with the Coalition for Equitable Justice and they discussed creating a non-discrimination policy.  She said their last meeting of the semester will be on Wednesday, December 5, at 4:30 p.m in room 311 A. She also announced that this is her last semester at FSU and she thanked everyone for their hard work.

Report of the Student Body Auditor: As of November 27, 2007, Senate  Projects is $8,553.00.

Committee Reports:                   

Student Affairs -    There will be a Christmas Party on Wednesday, December 5, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Florida Ballroom. You are asked to bring a gift of at least $10. For information about Student Affairs go to sga.got.issues@sga.fsu.edu.

Judiciary - The Senate interviewed and passed Travis Johnson for Student Body Attorney General.

Internal Affairs - The Senate interviewed and passed Kaylan Johnson for ILS at-large Board Member, Karli MacDonald for ICS Board of Directors, Christina Martinez for HLSU Fundraising Chair, and Jennifer Martinez for PSU Board of Directors.

Rules and Calendar - The committee passed Resolution 5 and Resolution 6 was withdrawn by the sponsor. Senate President Cole announced that Andrew Malone is the acting Parliamentarian.

Sweepings - The committee will have deliberations on Saturday, November 1, starting at 10 a.m. in the Grads Made Good Room.

Senate Confirmations: Kaylan Johnson for ILS at-large Board Member, Karli MacDonald for ICS Board of Directors, Christina Martinez for HLSU Fundraising Chair, and Jennifer Martinez for PSU Board of Directors, Travis Johnson for Student Body Attorney General.

Bills First Reading:    

Bill 2 - Sponsored by Senators Cutler and Przybylowicz. A revision of $500.00 within the Pride Student Union from Contractual Services to Food. Purpose: to restructure the PSU budget to account for the operating costs associated with the LGBTQ Student Resource Center. TABLED IN FINANCE.

Bill 9 - Sponsored by the Sweepings Committee. A transfer of $243,121 from 2006-07 Sweepings to Sweepings Recipients. Purpose: to allocate funds in compliance with Student Body Statutes Chapter 412. REFERRED TO SWEEPINGS.

Bill 10 - Sponsored by Senators R. Thompson and Ondriska. An addition to the Student Body Statutes adding Chapter 1012. Purpose: to create the International Student Union. REFERRED TO FINANCE, BUDGET AND JUDICIARY.

Bills Second Reading:

Bill 8 - Sponsored by Senators Entine and Seifter. A revision to the  Student Body Statues Chapter 700. Purpose: to make necessary clarifications and changes to the Elections Code in its entirety.  POSTPONED ONE WEEK.

Constitutional Amendments: None.

Resolutions:

Resolution 2 -  Sponsored by Senator Freelove.

Subject: Requiring that the vice chair of a committee shall serve six (6) weeks in Senate prior to assuming the chair.

POSTPONED 3 WEEKS IN RULES AND CALENDAR.

Resolution 5 -  Sponsored by Senator R. Thompson.

Subject: Amending the Rules of Procedure Rule 7.04.

PASSED. YES-29, NO-7.

Resolution 6 -  Sponsored by Senator R. Thompson.

Subject: Amending the Rules of Procedure Rule 9.05.

Closing Announcements: Senator Toole announced that the website is finished. She also announced that the holiday party is on Wednesday, December 5, from 6:30-7:30 in the Florida ballroom. Senator Toole thanked everyone who supported her when her friend died. She said that this is the most tense and hurtful Senate and since tomorrow is not guaranteed, be careful what you say to people.  Senator Freelove thanked everyone who attended “Stream of Consciousness”. Senator Sokos announced that the Business School is having an event entitled “Women in Business Seminar” on Friday in the Starry Conference Room. Senator Entine announced that there is a new organization called Torch and it is not a political party. He said they will meet on Tuesday, December 4, at 9 p.m., and their purpose is to get together and meet people and so please come out and support this new group, he said. Senator Fasano said that she is a part of the Women in Business Seminar and they are encouraging men to attend also.  Dr. Howard told the Senate they currently SGA does not have a Supervisor of Elections and none of the current deputies want to be the supervisor. She said that Dr. Coburn wants on-line voting. Sandra Miles announced that the PSU Drag Show is on Friday at 8:30 p.m. Senator Entine said the local fees committee met and no one showed up and now the fees will go to the Board of Trustees for approval. Senate Pro Tempore Kushner told the Senate that FSA has set the legislative agenda. He said that FSU has the best Senate, but UF thinks that they do. He asked the new Senators to turn in their homework on the bill/resolution assignment. Senate President Cole congratulated the Garnet and Gold inductees. She told the Senate that she needs pictures to go on her board in her office. She thanked the acting parliamentarian for a job well done. Cole congratulated Senator Robert Thompson on his internship at the White House in the Spring 2008 semester. She asked the Senate to please review the dress code in the Rules of Procedure Rule 12.18. She urged the Senators to read their Senate bills in advance.
