The Journal: January 30, 2008


The meeting of the 60th Student Senate was called to order at 7:43 p.m. by Student Senate President Nathasha Cole.

Senator Loe led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Moment of Silent Reflection:

Student Comments: Dustin Daniels, President of One Here One There, a new RSO announced that their group, along with the Ambassadors of Multicultural Affairs, will host an event where they will auction off student leaders. He said that so far BSU and HLSU are participating and more student organizations are needed. He said that all proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society and education. Senator Holman told the Senate that some students  came to her saying that they do not feel that the Senate gives them their attention and respect and she hopes that this changes.

Messages from the Executive Branch: None.

Messages from Agency and Bureau Directors, and SGA Organization Officers and Employees: Stephanie Brehm, JSU Assistant Director announced that they are sponsoring an event on April 1 at 8 p.m. in the Union Ballroom with Comedy Central’s Judy Gold and Decision 2008. Shawn Mahoney, IRHC Assistant Director announced that they are having a concert in late March and he will give out the details later. Monique Valquez, AASU Director, invited the Senate to their banquet on February 12, at 7 p.m. in Miller Hall University Center C. Please RSVP by February 7.  Anh Chau, AASU Assistant Director told the Senate that they can pick up a t-shirt after February 7.

Messages from the Judicial Branch: None.

Messages from the Union Board: None.

Messages from Campus Recreation: Adam Fox, Chair of Campus Rec Board, announced that there are new bikes and an awesome Smoothie Bar. He told the Senate that they are raising rates for faculty and staff; rates have not been raised in 5 years.  Fox also announced that they are having a retreat this weekend at the Rez.

Report of the Student Body Auditor: As of January 29, 2008, Senate  Projects is $18,109.

Committee Reports:

Student Affairs-Chairman Toole announced that the Got Issues campaign will be on March 5.

Budget-As reported in the Calendar.

Finance-As reported in the Calendar.

Judiciary-As reported in the Calendar. Chairman Entine said that the committee is starting impeachment proceedings on a Senator that has 7 absences. The Senate interviewed and passed John Hillert for Student Supreme Court Chief  Justice.

Internal Affairs-As reported in the Calendar.

Consent Calendar: None.   

Bills First Reading:   

Bill 14 - Sponsored by Senator DuBosar. A revision to the Student Body Statutes Chapter 400.4. Purpose: to define what will constitute a quorum for the Senate.  REFERRED TO JUDICIARY.

Bill 15 - Sponsored by Senator DuBosar. A revision to the Student Body Statutes Chapter 803.11. Purpose: to clarify printed materials and logo requirements. REFERRED TO JUDICIARY.

Bills Second Reading:

Bill 13 - Sponsored by Senators Fasano and Dawson. An allocation of $793.81 from Senate Projects to Equestrian Club. Purpose: to help pay for the Inter-Collegiate Dressage Association Competition on February 9, 2008. PASSED.

Constitutional Amendments: None.

Resolutions:

Resolution 8 -  Sponsored by Senators DuBosar and Harrison.

Subject: Amending the Rules of Procedure Rule 13.

FAILED. YES-17, NO-15.  DID NOT GET THE TWO-THIRDS REQUIREMENT NEEDED TO CHANGE THE RULES OF PROCEDURE.

Resolution 16 - Sponsored by Senator Brandow.

Subject: Putting the funding request forms for registered student organizations on the home page of both the SGA and SAC websites.

PASSED WITHOUT OBJECTION.

Unfinished Business: None.

New Business: Senator Entine introduced the amendments to Bill 8. There was a motion, by Senator Harrison, to overturn the decision of the Chair concerning how to handle the line item veto of Vice President for Student Affairs Coburn. The motion failed. There was a motion by Senator Entine to reconsider Bill 8, the motion passed and Bill 8 passed as amended by a vote of 24-yes, 2-no and 2-abstentions.

Closing Announcements: Senator Harrison apologized to the Senate for his actions. Senator Entine told the Senate that he wrote a letter to a four star general asking him to speak at his commission ceremony. Senator Seifter said some people are trying to trick people and they want people to see how smart they are. Senator Brandow told the Senate that one of his high school teachers passed and the Senate held a special moment of silence. Senate President Cole thanked everyone for the shoutout for Extrav. She announced that Leader Shape applications are available.  She also announced that HLSU had a celebration of diversity tonight.
