The meeting of the 60th Student Senate was called to order at 7:32 p.m. by Student Senate President Nathasha Cole. Senator Ondriska led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. Student Comments: Jeremy Lightner told the Senate that he will start an organization based on gender and the way that things are now he can keep anyone out. He said that SGA is supposed to accept all students and he appreciates what the Senate did last week as a body. Pride Student Union members “Baby Gays” announced that they will be showing and discussing Hotel Rawanda and they will hold a mock wedding on February 13 in the Union and there will be cake. The group also plan to have Bible study on Tuesday, January 22 with the United Church of Tallahassee at the PSU Center. Special Introductions and Announcements: None. Messages from the Executive Branch: Ryan Powers, OLA Director, announced that the first day of session is March 4. He also announced that they have hired the Pittman Law Group as the lobbyist. He asked for ideas or issues that anyone has to please e-mail him. Powers said the agenda will be set in a few weeks and FSU Day at the Capitol is April 15. Sara Sokola, Chief of Staff, announced that next week is the first meeting of the Cabinet for the semester. Robert Jakubik, Secretary of Campus Security passed out the emergency management manual to the Senate. He told the Senate that FSU now has the alert system if an emergency strikes FSU is well prepared. Messages from Agency and Bureau Directors, and SGA Organization Officers and Employees: Jose Requena, HLSU Director, told the Senate that he is taking suggestions and ideas for the HLSU concert this spring and you can e-mail him at jar04@fsu.edu. He announced that their first general body meeting of the spring 2008 semester is January 30 at 6 p.m. in room 101 Student Life Center Building. David Grimes, ILS Director, announced that they now have office space on the 3rd floor of the Union. He told the Senate that the Coalition for an Equitable Community has filed a lawsuit against the Union Board and they are going to court on February 5. James Lawrence, MARC Director, said that one of their goals to have all new Greek members to go to risk management in the fall. He thanked the Senate for their support. Keenan Mahoney, IRHC Assistant Director, told the Senate that their national conference is in May and they won for the Best Leadership Training in the Nation. Messages from the Congress of Graduate Students: None. Messages from the Senior Class Council: None. Messages from the Judicial Branch: None. Messages from the Union Board: Jamie announced that the Union Board has begun the space allocation process and applications are due on January 30. She announced that they will be showing the Great Debators on January 17. Jamie said that the Bank of America is moving their ATM and that space will be used for an information site. Messages from Campus Recreation: None. Report of the Student Body Auditor: As of January 15, 2008, Senate Projects is $12,737.00 and Senate Unallocated is $5,372.00. Committee Reports: Student Affairs-The committee will meet on Fridays at 5:30 p.m. The committee will discuss extending the hours of the Tomahawk or have the Night Nole start running earlier. Got Issues will take place in February. Budget-Did not meet. Finance-There was a motion to go into Committee of the Whole for Bill 11, the motion passed. The Senate debated on Bill 11 and it was passed without objection. Judiciary-The committee did not meet. The committee will meet Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. to hear Bill 12. Internal Affairs-The Senate interviewed and passed Tywayne Buchanan for Supervisor of Elections and Emily Wright for Pow Wow Director, without objection. Rules and Calendar-The committee did not look at Resolution 8 because the sponsors were not present. Chairman Kushner called for a recess so that Senators from the same school/college can contact their deans. Senate Confirmations: Tywayne Buchanan for Supervisor of Elections and Emily Wright for Pow Wow Director. Consent Calendar: None. Bills First Reading: Bill 2 - Sponsored by Senators Cutler and Przybylowicz. A revision of $500.00 within the Pride Student Union from Contractual Services to Food. Purpose: to restructure the PSU budget to account for the operating costs associated with the LGBTQ Student Resource Center. WITHDRAWN. Bill 10 - Sponsored by Senators R. Thompson and Ondriska. An addition to the Student Body Statutes adding Chapter 1012. Purpose: to create the International Student Union. WITHDRAWN BY SPONSOR. Bill 12 - Sponsored by Senators Seifter and Howard. A revision to the Student Body Statutes Chapters 711, 712 and 715. Purpose: to make changes to the Election Code to allow for online voting to be implemented in addition to registered polling sites. REFERRED TO JUDICIARY. Bills Second Reading: Bill 11 - Sponsored by Senators Omega and Singh. A transfer of $5,372 from Senate Unallocated to Senate Projects. Purpose: to put monies in the Senate Projects account so that funds can be allocated to various student organizations. PASSED. Constitutional Amendments: None. Resolutions: Resolution 2 - Sponsored by Senator Freelove. Subject: Requiring that the vice chair of a committee shall serve six (6) weeks in Senate prior to assuming the chair. FAILED: YES-8, NO-25. Resolution 8 - Sponsored by Senators DuBosar and Harrison. Subject: Amending the Rules of Procedure Rule 13.REFERRED TO RULES AND CALENDAR. Resolution 13 - Sponsored by Senators Sokos and Harrison. Subject: Having the Spring elections take place on Wednesday, February 27, 2008. PASSED. (Amended from Feb.20 to Feb. 27). Unfinished Business: None. New Business: Closing Announcements: Senator Kaufman announced that the Senate will go to Café Cabernet. Senator Seifter asked the Senate to look at Bill 12 before it comes on the floor and if you have any questions, please call him. Senator Fasano announced that applications for Student Alumni Council are now on line. Senator Sokos asked the Senate to support the university heritage protocol where they are gathering artifacts and pictures of FSU. She said the exhibit is in Strozier Library and it will stay open until Friday, and she wants to know if anyone will be interested in taking the tour with her. Senator Emilien announced that Seminole Futures will be in the Starry Conference Room in the Business Building on Thursday, January 17, at 7 p.m. Senator LaCroix announced that Senate President Cole became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and he asked everyone to congratulate her. Dana Vettel, former Senator, announced that Garnet and Gold Key is accepting applications and you have to have a 3.0 GPA and 2 leadership positions and 2 semesters at FSU. Sandra Miles announced that she has tickets for the movie, the Great Debaters which is showing Thursday, January 17 at 4:30 p.m. Senate President Cole announced that the 60th Student Senate has been invited to attend the tribute to C.K. Steele and Dr. M.L. King, where they will march from the bus terminal to the Capitol to celebrate King’s birthday. Cole announced that Delta Sigma Theta is having a party at Baja’s tomorrow night. She congratulated Senator Seifter on becoming the Senator of the Month for December.
