The Journal: January 09, 2008


The meeting of the 60th Student Senate was called to order at 7:32 p.m. by Student Senate President Nathasha Cole.

Senator Entine led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Student Comments: Senator Loe told the Senate that he is working on the Green Space project and recycling initiatives and if anyone is interested in helping out please sign up on the sheet that is being passed around.

Special Introductions and Announcements: None.

Messages from the Executive Branch: Jessica Ridley, Homecoming Director, announced that applications are available and the deadline is Monday, January 14.  She asked the Senators to tell campus organizations to apply. Ridley said that three Senators are needed to sit on the committee and interviews will take place on January 28 and 29, from 6-10 p.m.

Messages from Agency and Bureau Directors, and SGA Organization Officers and Employees: Keenan Mahoney, IRHC Assistant Director, announced that IRHC Week is March 24 and they have completed their event calendar for the spring semester. 

Messages from the Congress of Graduate Students: None.

Messages from the Senior Class Council: None.

Messages from the Judicial Branch: None.

Messages from the Union Board: Sadie Molinet, Union Board Chair, announced that on January 11, there will be a billiard exhibition, and on January 12, students can play games on the big screen at the Student Life Building. The Union Board will meet on Wednesday, at 4:30 p.m.

Messages from Campus Recreation: None.

Report of the Student Body Auditor: As of January 8, 2008, Senate  Projects is $12,737.00 and Senate Unallocated is $5,372.00.

Committee Reports:

Student Affairs -    Chairman Toole announced that the committee will meet on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Senate Office. Carol O’Domski, Parking Services Director, will be there to discuss the campus bus schedule.

Budget-The committee meets on Mondays at 7 p.m. in the Senate Office.

Finance-The committee meets on Thursdays at 6 p.m. in the Senate Office.

Judiciary-The committee meets on Mondays at 5 p.m. in the Senate Office.

Internal Affairs-The committee meets on Mondays at 8 p.m.

Rules and Calendar-The committee did not meet.

Bills First Reading:    

Bill 2 - Sponsored by Senators Cutler and Przybylowicz. A revision of $500.00 within the Pride Student Union from Contractual Services to Food. Purpose: to restructure the PSU budget to account for the operating costs associated with the LGBTQ Student Resource Center. TABLED IN FINANCE.

Bill 10 - Sponsored by Senators R. Thompson and Ondriska. An addition to the Student Body Statutes adding Chapter 1012. Purpose: to create the International Student Union. POSTPONED IN FINANCE, STILL IN BUDGET AND JUDICIARY.

Bill 11 - Sponsored by Senators Omega and Singh. A transfer of $5,372 from Senate Unallocated to Senate Projects. Purpose: to put monies in the Senate Projects account so that funds can be allocated to various student organizations. REFERRED TO FINANCE.

Bills Second Reading:

Bill 8 - Sponsored by Senators Entine and Seifter. A revision to the  Student Body Statues Chapter 700. Purpose: to make necessary clarifications and changes to the Elections Code in its entirety.  PASSED. (There was a motion to add a rider, Bill 9,  to this bill, the motion failed yes-5, no-27).

Bill 9 - Sponsored by the Sweepings Committee. A transfer of $243,121 from 2006-07 Sweepings to Sweepings Recipients. Purpose: to allocate funds in compliance with Student Body Statutes Chapter 412. PASSED. YES-37, NO-2.

Constitutional Amendments: None.

Resolutions:

Resolution 2 -  Sponsored by Senator Freelove.

Subject: Requiring that the vice chair of a committee shall serve six (6) weeks in Senate prior to assuming the chair.

POSTPONED 3 WEEKS IN RULES AND CALENDAR.

Resolution 8 -  Sponsored by Senators DuBosar and Harrison.

Subject: Amending the Rules of Procedure Rule 13.

REFERRED TO RULES AND CALENDAR.

Resolution 9 -  Sponsored by Senators Sokos and Rosenkoetter.

Subject: Approving proposed allocations for the Entertainment Allocations Committee.

PASSED.

Resolution 10 - Sponsored by Senators Sokos and Rosenkoetter.

Subject: Approving proposed allocations for the Career Advancement Allocations Committee.

PASSED.

Resolution 11 - Sponsored by Senators Sokos and Rosenkoetter.

Subject: Approving proposed allocations for the Special Interest Allocations Committee.

PASSED.

Resolution 12 - Sponsored by Senators Sokos and Rosenkoetter.

Subject: Approving proposed allocations for the Service Oriented Allocations Committee.

New Business: The Senate elected the Senator of the Month for December, 2007.

Closing Announcements: Senator Toole told the Senate that she was disappointed that someone makes a motion because someone else tell them to. She urged the Senators to stay informed.  Senator Harrison told the Senate that he was fired as a RA and there are questionable reasons for his firing.  Senator Loe thanked everyone who signed up for the Green Space Initiative, and said that he is here to make a difference. Senator Frady announced that he is retiring from football and he thanked everyone for their support throughout the years.  Joyce Howard welcomed the Senators back and announced that there will be a hearing, where the Union Board is being sued,  on Tuesday, January 15 at the Law School at 7 p.m. in the Moot Court Chamber. Sandra Miles told the Senate to debate issues not people.  Senate Pro Tempore Kushner announced that this is his last semester at FSU and he wants to find something that the entire Senate can work on. He said he wants to see Senate having more fun. Kushner also stressed that all his friends have graduated, his girl friend is in London and he is lonely. Senator Paul announced that Alpha Phi Alpha is having a party at Baja on January 19; the cost is $10.  Senate President Cole wished everyone a Happy New Year. She told the Senate that she has packets for internships at the Capitol if anyone is interested. Cole told the Senate that she was not pleased that quorum was lost last semester, when the Sweepings Bill was supposed to be acted upon.
