The department of religion encourages talented juniors and seniors
to participate in the "Honors in the Major Program"
as part of their undergraduate experience. The goal of the program
is the completion and defense of an honors thesis in a framework
similar to that of a thesis-based master's degree program. Completion
of the Honors in the Major Program is recognized by the distinction
of graduating "with Honors," as designated on the
transcript. Honors thesis work is carried out by the student
over a period of two or three semesters in collaboration with
a Directing Professor and two or three other faculty members
who serve on the student's honors thesis committee. The Honors
thesis project culminates with the defense before the honors
thesis committee.
Students
interested in pursuing the Honors in the Major Program should
consult the Director
of Undergraduate Studies and the faculty member who will
be directing their thesis. Students should also contact the
University
Honors Office to make a formal application to the program.
The application must show that the student has completed at
least sixty (60) semester hours and achieved at least a 3.20
cumulative GPA. In addition, applicants must demonstrate that
they have a proposed thesis topic, sufficient time prior to
graduation to complete the project, a directing professor, and
the support of the academic department. Detailed information
on procedures for initiating and completing the Honors in the
Major Program can be found at the program website, http://honorsinthemajor.fsu.edu.
Typically,
each student in the program works on the thesis project for
two or three semesters. During each of these semesters, the
student must register for REL4932 for one (1) to three (3) semester
hours. Students must earn a total of six (6) to nine (9) honors
credits and must receive at least a "B–" in
each of these courses. Students must also maintain at least
a 3.20 cumulative GPA until graduation.
