Background
John
Kelsay (Ph.D. '85, University of Virginia, Ethics) is
Distinguished Research Professor and Richard L. Rubenstein Professor
of Religion. His work focuses on religious ethics, particularly
in relation to the Islamic and Christian traditions. His current
projects include two books, for which the working titles are Religion
and the Imperatives of Justice: The Islamic Law of War and Peace,
and Islam and the Political Future: The Doctrine of Jihad
and the Practice of Shari`a Reasoning. Professor Kelsay serves
as co-editor of the Journal
of Religious Ethics. In support of these projects, he
has received fellowships from the Princeton University Center
for Human Values and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation.
Having
recently stepped down after ten years as Department Chair, Professor
Kelsay will be on leave during the 2006-07 academic year, during
which time he will be a fellow of the Institute for International
Integration Studies, Trinity University, Dublin.
