Welcome to InterCulture
Mission Statement/ About InterCulture
As a response to the onslaught of discourses
attempting to position a united ‘"us" against
a homogenous ‘"them," InterCulture is committed
to publishing academic and creative work that wants to exist in
that iconic space between. The ‘"inter" in InterCulture's
name alludes to our ongoing endeavor to uncover the dynamism that
exists at the margins of conventional academic disciplines. The
prefix also points to this journal's commitment to publish work
from among a crowd of scholars and artists who understand the
necessity of acknowledging the cultural diversity of the contemporary
world.
Conceptually, ‘"inter" evokes
a particular mode of analysis from which to think about a variety
of subjects. While discipline signifies the standardization and
codification of knowledge in an academic setting, interdisciplinarity
challenges both the disciplinary structure of the university and
the traditional humanistic approach to the Western canon. Look
at how the addition of ‘"inter" adds to the meaning
of international, making commonplace economic flows, social structures,
and political interests that exist outside of those nearly sacred
boundaries defining the modern nation-state. Internet evokes the
image of a group of networks that have relevancy precisely because
of their connection between and among each other. These examples
illustrate how "inter" is articulated culturally, and
InterCulture seeks academic and creative work that does just this.
InterCulture invites scholars and artists to
submit essays, book reviews, artist's statements, creative writing,
and digital videos or images. No privilege is given to a particular
theoretical approach, and all manners of interdisciplinary studies
are encouraged. InterCulture works in tandem with FSU's Department
of Interdisciplinary Humanities (DIH) annual conference, InterDisciplines.
Each year, the journal and academic conference come together under
a common theme. InterCulture publishes one issue per semester.
Created in 2004 by the DIS, InterCulture is a
peer-reviewed e-journal registered with ISSN. Governed by a multicultural
and multidisciplinary editorial board composed of graduate students
and faculty, InterCulture has established peer-review procedures
to ensure the quality of publications for academic use. Please
see Submission Guidelines” for specific information regarding
procedures, regulations, and responsibilities for potential publications.
