English Education Programs
Our undergraduate students finish the English Education program prepared to apply for certification in secondary English (grades 6-12). They have numerous opportunities, as part of their course work, to spend time working with adolescents and their teachers in local classrooms; they tutor individual at-risk students, teach small groups, and plan and present lessons to middle and high school classes prior to engaging in a semester-long student teaching internship.
Students who enroll in the English Education master's degree choose from five program tracks:
- The traditional English Education track involves a concentration in English and English Education coursework, and is recommended for early-career teachers;
- The certification track is one in which those who did not earn teaching certification with undergraduate degrees can combine the traditional English Education track with certification requirements;
- The secondary reading track involves a concentration on English Education and reading courses, and is recommended for practicing teachers who wish to enhance their knowledge of reading skills instruction along with traditional English Education foci;
- The community college composition track involves course work in English Education, higher education, and English composition, with an emphasis on preparing students to teach in college-level composition courses;
- The English Education/English Language Learners track involves a concentration on English education and English as a Second Language courses, recommended for those who wish to enhance their teaching certification with ESL endorsement, or those who wish to consider teaching English in non-English speaking countries.
The English Education specialist and doctoral programs are restricted to experienced and successful teachers of secondary English who are committed to becoming professional leaders through teaching, research, and publications. These programs provide support for students who will work as university professors in English Education, literacy, or secondary English, as curriculum specialists in county or state offices, as textbook consultants, and as classroom teachers and school leaders. In addition to required coursework in English and English Education, students in the specialist and doctoral programs are required to sub-specialize in educational areas such as educational research, higher education, philosophy of education, reading, school counseling, and so on. Doctoral students are expected to teach undergraduate courses and supervise student teachers during their time in the program. The final product of the doctoral program is a book-length dissertation.
