Ada Belle Winthrop-King Endowed Memorial Fund UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP IN ARABIC, SUMMER 2007 Deadline for Applications: October 5, 2006 AIMS AND CONDITIONS GOVERNING THIS AWARD The purpose of the Ada Belle Winthrop-King Summer Semester Scholarship in Arabic is to provide an opportunity for a Florida State University student who is studying Arabic to study on an approved overseas program in Arabic in order to increase his or her knowledge of the Arabic language and cultures of Arabic expression. The award is open to graduate and undergraduate students. Previous study or travel in an Arabic-speaking country will not make the applicant ineligible. The scholarship is repeatable. This scholarship is valued at $6,500. To be eligible to take up the award, the applicant must have completed at least three semesters of Arabic at FSU by the end of the semester prior to the award period. The financial aid awarded by the Winthrop-King Fund in respect of this scholarship is limited to the fixed sum of $6,500. Graduate recipients of Winthrop-King awards majoring in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics may be eligible for tuition waivers. Students majoring in other departments are not eligible for tuition waivers from the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics; neither the Winthrop-King Fund nor the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics can provide any financial assistance to such students beyond the value of the scholarship. Applicants are subject to the General Conditions and Procedures Governing Winthrop-King Awards (see below). GENERAL CONDITIONS AND PROCEDURES GOVERNING WINTHROP-KING AWARDS How to Submit Your Application The forms for each part of the scholarship application (A, B, C, D) may be accessed by clicking on the links at the end of these guidelines (below). All required parts of the scholarship application must be completed and submitted by the advertised Winthrop-King applications deadline. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered by the Scholarships Committee. Be sure to comply with all of the important instructions below; failure to do so will render you ineligible for an award. All applicants All applicants must complete Parts A and B of the application form. Part A is submitted electronically. Part B must be submitted in hard copy to the Undergraduate or Graduate Office in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics. Applicants intending to study on a program administered by FSU's International Programs Applicants for Winthrop-King scholarships intending to study on a program administered by FSU's International Programs (IP) must apply for a place on the IP program in accordance with the separate deadlines and procedures laid down by IP. These students are not required to complete Part C or D of the scholarship application form. Applicants intending to study on a program administered by a foreign university Students whose intended program of study is administered by a foreign university must, in addition to Parts A and B, complete Part C of the scholarship application form in hard copy and submit it, together with supporting documentation, to the Undergraduate or Graduate Office in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics. Applicants intending to study on a program administered by a U.S. university other than FSU Students whose intended program of study is administered by a U.S. university other than FSU must, in addition to Parts A and B, complete Part D of the scholarship application form in hard copy and submit it, together with supporting documentation, to the Undergraduate or Graduate Office in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics. Part A: On-line application form This part of the application is to be submitted electronically. You may save your data and return to it later before submitting the completed application. When your application is complete, you must press the "submit" button. If you do not press the "submit" button by the advertised deadline, your application will not be considered by the Scholarships Committee. Part B: Transcripts (hard-copy submission) Undergraduates must submit with their applications unofficial GPA transcripts of all undergraduate courses which they have taken. Based on the information supplied by the candidate the Undergraduate Office in the Department of Modern Languages will calculate (a) the applicant's overall GPA in all undergraduate courses and (b) the applicant's GPA in all undergraduate courses taken in the language of the award for which they are applying. Graduates (with the exception of applicants for ABD awards) must include with their applications sufficient information to enable the Graduate Office in the Department of Modern Languages to calculate (a) their overall GPA in all courses taken during the previous 4 semesters of study and (b) their GPA during the previous 4 semesters of study in all courses taken in the language of the award for which they are applying. If all 4 semesters of study were at FSU, the Graduate Office will access the relevant information on-line. If one or more of the 4 semesters of study was at an institution other than FSU, the applicant must provide with the application GPA transcripts of the courses concerned. If the applicant is an International student and does not have GPAs, he or she must provide documentation showing grades obtained. Completed Transcript forms and accompanying documents must be submitted to the Undergraduate or Graduate Office in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics by not later than the advertised deadline. Part C: Independent Study application form (hard copy submission) The Independent Study application form must be completed and submitted together Cover Sheet and supporting documentation by all candidates intending to pursue a program of study abroad administered by a foreign university. Separate versions of the Independent Study application program form and Cover Sheet exist for undergraduates and graduates. When completed, the Independent Study application form, Cover Sheet and supporting documentation must be submitted to the Undergraduate or Graduate Office in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics by not later than the advertised deadline for the submission of Winthrop-King scholarship applications. Successful applicants for Winthrop-King scholarships to study on approved programs of Independent Study must pay fees levied by FSUIP. These fees are set out in the Independent Study application materials and are the responsibility of the student. Undergraduates When submitting the Independent Study application form to the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics as part of your scholarship application, you need not include the non-refundable deposit of $75. If your application for a Winthrop-King scholarship is successful, you must collect your Independent Study application form from the Undergraduate Office of the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics within one week of notification of the award and must then forward it, together the non-refundable deposit of $75, to International Programs at the address indicated on the Independent Study application materials; the remainder of the FSUIP fees must be paid by the date stipulated by FSUIP. The Winthrop-King award will be withdrawn if the recipient fails to pay FSUIP fees by the due date. Recipients of Winthrop-King awards may submit to FSUIP a Fee Deferment Request form for deferment of FSUIP instructional fees until a short period after completion of the foreign study; upon completion or leaving of the departmentally approved foreign program of study, the student must bring or submit to the FSUIP office the receipt from the foreign institution related to the instructional effort; FSUIP will release the student from the instructional fee liability to the extent of the receipt up to an amount not exceeding that of the FSUIP instructional fee. All other FSUIP fees must be paid prior to receipt of the Winthrop-King award. Graduates All graduate applicants for Winthrop-King awards involving a period of study abroad must submit as part of their application an Independent Study application form. When submitting the Independent Study application form to the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics as part of your scholarship application, you need not include the FSUIP fee of $75. If your application for a Winthrop-King award is successful, you must collect your Independent Study application form from the Graduate Office of the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics within one week of notification of the award and must then forward it, together the non-refundable fee of $75, to FSUIP at the address indicated on the Independent Study application materials by not later the date stipulated by FSUIP. The Winthrop-King award will be withdrawn if the recipient fails to pay the FSUIP fee by the due date. Part D: Approval request form for study on study abroad program administered by a U.S. university other than FSU (hard copy submission) Applicants intending to study on a program administered by a U.S. university other than FSU must complete Part D and submit it together with supporting documentation (e.g. program brochure or internet address) sufficient to enable the Department Chair to assess the suitability of their proposed program of study. Separate versions of the form exist for undergraduates and graduates. Award Conditions All applicants Awards are made for future study in the semester specified in the application; they may not be made for current or past semesters nor for a semester prior to that following the semester in which application results are announced. Awards are made for the specified semester and may not be deferred until a later date. Awards cannot be taken up after graduation from FSU. Successful applicants who are unable to attend the program for which they are awarded funds must repay the award within 7 days of the commencement of the program. Awards will not be granted for study on programs which FSU prohibits or discourages its students from attending, e.g. on the grounds of U.S. State Department travel warnings; awards may be withdrawn at any time on the grounds of revised FSU advice or prohibition. If you receive federal or state financial aid, these awards may affect your entitlement. You are advised to check with the aid agency before applying for one of these awards. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all necessary information, including a valid e-mail address, is provided legibly on the application form, together with supporting transcripts and other documentation where required. Applications which are incomplete, illegible or in any other way ineligible will not be considered by the Scholarship Committee. Awards are made at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee, taking into account all the information provided on the application form. The Committee's decision is final. If the Committee so determines, no award will be made. Candidates will be notified of the outcome of their applications by e-mail in the Spring Semester of 2007 and normally by not later than January 12, 2007. The Committee does not provide any additional feedback to candidates. In view of the large number of applicants, the notification process may take several days and candidates should not be concerned if some applicants receive notification before others. Candidates are responsible for supplying a valid e-mail address in their application and for checking their e-mail account for messages. For recipients who have completed all the necessary formalities by the due dates, awards are made available by FSU Student Financial Services the week after the Drop-Add period in the semester of the award after deduction of any balances owed by the student to the University. Recipients of Winthrop-King Awards are expected to attend Honors Night held in April. The Florida State University opposes all discriminatory practices based on race, creed, color, sex or national origin. Applicants intending to study on programs administered by FSU's International Programs Applicants who receive awards for study on a program administered by FSU's International Programs (IP) must register on the IP program within one week of notification of the award. Failure to register by the due date will result in cancellation of the award. Applicants intending to study on a program administered by a foreign university Applicants who receive awards for study on a program administered by a foreign university must forward to IP their Independent Study application and payment by not later than the deadline specified by IP. Failure to forward to IP the completed Independent Study application and payment will result in cancellation of the award. Applicants intending to study on a program administered by a U.S. university other than FSU Applicants who receive awards for study on a program administered by a U.S. university other than FSU must contact Betty Seymour in the FSU International Program office (644-3272) immediately they are notified of the award so that they can be advised on the necessary steps for enrollment with "transient" status, which is necessary for credit equivalence. Failure to complete the necessary steps within the prescribed timeframe will result in cancellation of the award. Enrollment for FSU credits All scholarship recipients intending to study on programs administered by foreign universities or by U.S. universities other than FSU must enroll for FSU credits as follows:
