How to request
travel funds to attend regional, national and international conferences
In late August, the department chair requests that you list which
conferences you will attend during that entire academic year. On the
basis of each request, each faculty is allotted conference moneys.
To apply for the moneys you were allotted, fill out and submit the Travel Funds Request Form on-line (HTML, PDF) at least 5 business
days before your departure.
To supplement these funds,
i. Apply to the Winthrop-King Travel Fund. Application
form is circulated by e-mail to all Dept faculty by Winthrop-King
Institute Director (ahargrea@mailer.fsu.edu) in fall and spring
semesters. Deadlines: approx. Oct. 5 and Feb. 5 (see current application
form for exact dates).
ii. Apply for the President’s Travel Fund if
you are attending a national or international conference (this grant is
not available to faculty attending regional conferences). Guidelines
and Application
information is available on the President’s web page.
If you do not need funds, you should nevertheless fill out a No Funds Requested form (HTML, PDF) in order to receive state
insurance coverage during your trip.
Resources
for research funding:
First Year Assistant Professor Grant, deadline approx. Nov. 15
annually. For application information, visit the Council on Research and
Creativity web page
2nd Year WK Asst Prof Grant in French. To apply, submit a
application form that replicates the FYAP form.
Information on COFRS and Planning Grants can be found on the Council on Research and
Creativity web page.
How to apply for departmental moneys, if they are available
(departmental funds are contingent of the number of faculty outside
grants, publications and graduate enrollment):
i. Departmental small grant. End of
January deadline, annually.
ii. OCO (see How to obtain additional computer equipment.)
How to use the Grants search device on the CRC web page to locate
information on outside funding sources:
Applications for outside grants routed through the FSU Office of
Research allow the Department of Modern Languages to receive recognition
for the faculty’s attempts to secure outside funding. More information
is available through the Office
of Research's Resources page.

How to arrange
audio-visual equipment in Diffenbaugh and in other campus buildings
Audio-visual equipment is easily accessed in Diffenbaugh. Simply go to
the Language Lab (104 DIF) 5 minutes before class, and sign out a Cd/cassette
player or TV/VCR cart. A laptop may be available by special request, but
it is impossible to access the Web in most classrooms in Diffenbaugh.
Faculty can schedule the computer classroom, located in the Computer
Lab on the 1st floor (126 and 129 DIF), on a one-time or a
regular basis. Contact Wolfgang Adolph to schedule the computer
classroom.
A select number of Diffenbaugh classrooms have been equipped with LCD
projectors and are wired for the Web. To schedule one of these rooms,
contact Earl Childers in Communications or Scheduling and Space.
If your class is in a building other than Diffenbaugh, request AV
equipment 24 hours in advance from Audio-Visual Services
Distribution.
How to order books
and deadlines for book orders
There are two bookstores that service the university: Bill’s
Bookstore and The Florida State University Bookstore. You can also order
your books online at the FSU
bookstore (faculty services), or Bill's Bookstore
(click on faculty textbooks).
Official deadlines are Oct. 1, March 1, and April 1 for the Spring,
summer and fall semesters respectively.
How to create new
courses or make official changes to course requirements and titles.
Multiple forms must be submitted to the Humanities Committee among
others. Forms are available from Jimmie Dickey. Winnie Adolph is an
excellent resource person if you are planning to make changes to a
course.
How to schedule a
special event.
To schedule a special event, such as film viewing, contact Scheduling
and Space at the following number, 644-8996 .

How to make
photocopies
The photocopier is located in the main office, on the right, and is
open to faculty from 8am to 5pm. It is not possible to make copies after
hours. Each faculty person is given a code to use while making copies. A
record is then kept of individual usage.
If you do not wish to make copies yourself, leave your copies in the
duplication basket on Mary K.’s desk. There is a 24 hour turn-around.
How to obtain or
order supplies
Supplies are located in the locked files cabinets near the photocopier.
Please ask the receptionist or Mary K. for assistance if you need
supplies.
How to make
long-distance calls and keep a record of the calls you make.
Each office phone requires a SUNCOM access number to make long-distance
calls. Dial 1 + the access code + # key + area code and number you are
calling. Consult Kathy Wimberly for further assistance using the phone.
Please keep a log of your long-distance calls and submit it to Kathy
Wimberly at the end of every month. The Phone log form is here (HTML, PDF).
The fax machine is located in the main office and faxes are logged in a
small black binder.

How to obtain
additional computer equipment.
If you would like to upgrade your equipment or require new software,
etc… please contact Wolfgang Adolph.
Once per year, a formal request is sent to faculty by email, but there
is frequently a lack of funds to purchase new equipment.
If you would like a TV/VCR in your office to watch SCOLA and other
channels, please see Ray Spencer.
COURTESY FUND
A courtesy fund has been established on behalf of the faculty in order
to be able to send flowers to commemorate funerals and births. At the
beginning of the year, faculty will be asked to make a contribution to
this fund (contributions should be on the order of 1/10th of 1
percent of your salary).
Timesheets
You are required to sign the timesheet that you will receive in your
mailbox and return it within 5 days of receipt. Faculty timesheets record
your sick days.
Mailboxes
The department has two sets of mailboxes. The first is key-accessed;
the second referred to as the "tub file" is located near the
photocopier. Should you receive a package you will be notified to check
the tub file or the cabinet (also in the copy room).
Special Collections of
Resources for Teaching
The department owns a video collection of foreign language
films and educational videos. The list of available titles is available on the web, www.modlang.fsu.edu/video/choose.pl.
Consult Ray Spencer for further details or go to
room 104 DIF to see what videos and cassettes are already on reserve.
Master Key
You may request to borrow the master key if you accidentally locked
yourself out of your office, or need to access another faculty person's
office.
Room 102 and 202
A special key is needed to access classrooms 102 and 202. The key can
be signed out behind Mary K's desk.
