E-mail Dr. Tarpley
PhD (2004) in French Literature from the University of Pittsburgh
MA (1996) in French Language and Literature from the University
of Pittsburgh
BA (1992) in French and English from Vanderbilt University
Professor Tarpley’s research interests are French and Francophone
literatures of the 20th and 21st centuries, particularly where
they address colonialism. His dissertation, “The Algerian
Island in the Novels of Albert Camus: The End of the Pied-Noir
Adventure Tale” examines Camus’s use of the robinsonade
to discuss his relationship with Algeria. Current projects include
an examination of Nigeria as portrayed by Le Clézio and
continued work on islands in French literature.
As Director of the French Basic Language Program, Professor Tarpley
coordinates 20+ sections of elementary and intermediate French
courses at FSU each semester. He enjoys working closely with the
Teaching Assistants in French as they master the many skills needed
to be effective in and out of the classroom. As Director of the
Paris Intensive French program through International Programs,
Professor Tarpley organizes FSU’s month-long language and
culture immersion program in Paris.
