The Adult and Continuing Education program at Florida State University is one of the oldest and best known in the country. It was founded in the early 1960s by Dr. George Aker, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, renowned adult educator and a leader in the field for almost three decades. He was joined shortly thereafter by Dr. Wayne Schroeder and Dr. Irwin Jahns, also University of Wisconsin graduates and by Dr. Roy Ingham, who received his doctorate from the University of Chicago. The Adult Education program at Florida State rapidly became one of the largest in the country and added important international dimensions with the overseas activities and student recruitment of its faculty.
