Florida State University is recognized as one of the outstanding research institutions in the Southeast. The History department offers an impressive chronological, geographical, and topical coverage in our courses. In addition we have a collection of notable strengths and specialties, particularly the U.S. South, African American, U.S. Intellectual and Cultural History, Public History, Atlantic World, Latin America, Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century France, and Modern Europe. In addition, beginning in the Fall of 2007 we will also have an expert in Native American studies. Further, the department houses several very active institutes and centers: The Institute on World War II and the Human Experience, the Reichelt Oral History Program, the Institute on Napoleon and the French Revolution, the Holocaust Institute for Educators, and the Guadalajara Censuses Project.
