Molly Oshatz
Assistant Professor of History
Molly Oshatz completed an M.A. in European History (1997) and a Ph.D. in American History (2007) at the University of California, Berkeley. She specializes in the intellectual and religious history of nineteenth century America, with an emphasis on the intellectual and cultural sources of liberal theological, social and moral thought. Her dissertation, "Accidental Liberalism: The Slavery Debates and the Rise of Protestant Liberalism in America, 1830-1890" examined how the slavery debates forced antislavery Protestants to adopt liberal positions on theology and morality that became essential to the postwar development of mainline Protestant liberalism. At FSU, Oshatz will be offering undergraduate and graduate courses on various aspects of nineteenth century America, including intellectual history, the history of morality, the meaning of antislavery reform, and the relationship between religion and democracy.
