Welcome

As chair of the Department of History at Florida State University let me welcome you. On our website, which I encourage you to browse, you will find useful information about the department, its courses, professors, and graduate students -- in addition to information and links about the intellectual and cultural life of the university and the region.

If you are a prospective student, either undergraduate or graduate, I hope you will spend extra time on this site getting to know our department. Faculty members here are very proud of the department we have created together. As practicing research historians we publish well and take pride in passing our research skills and knowledge to our students. Because we emphasize the importance of good teaching, members of the department have received an impressive collection of teaching awards. We have a strong, first-rate department that operates in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Our undergraduates receive a solid liberal arts education that fosters critical thinking, clear writing, and a historical understanding of culture, politics, and society around the globe. Our graduate students train with prominent faculty members to become the researchers, writers, and teachers of tomorrow.

Undergraduates at FSU who are considering history as a major should visit the undergraduate programs section of our website for additional information, and might also want to contact our undergraduate advisors Ms. Anne Kozar or Dr. Jonathan Grant. Prospective graduate students should visit the graduate programs section and contact Ms. Anne Kozar.

Florida State University is recognized as one of the outstanding research institutions in the Southeast. The department offers an impressive chronological, geographical, and topical coverage in our courses. In addition we have a collection of notable strengths and specialties, particularly the Atlantic World, Latin America, Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century France, the US South, African American, US Intellectual and Cultural History, and Modern Europe. Further, the department houses several very active institutes and centers: The Institute on Napoleon and the French Revolution, the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience, the New Deal Initiative, the Reichelt Oral History Program, the Allen Morris Conference, the Holocaust Institute for Educators, and the Guadalajara Censuses Project.

Again, I encourage you to follow our links to pages of departmental information, photos, and resources. We are always interested in prospective students with strong credentials who are talented, curious and ambitious. If this describes you I hope you will apply for admission and become a part of a high-powered and collegial group of students and professors. If you have any questions about the department, please feel free to contact me or any of the department of history staff at 850-644-5888.

Cordially,

Neil Jumonville
