Dr. Joy Gaston Gayles
Assistant Professor
Joy Gaston Gayles joined the higher education faculty in 2002. She holds a doctorate in
higher education administration from The Ohio State University, a master's degree in
higher education administration from Auburn University, and a Bachelor's degree in
adapted physical education and kinesiotherapy from Shaw University. In 1996 she
received a postgraduate scholarship from the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA) to pursue graduate study. Prior to her faculty appointment at FSU she was an
academic counselor and coordinator of student athlete advising for the Undergraduate
Student Services Office at The Ohio State University. Her research focuses on the
college student experience and campus environments, particularly for college athletes
and students of color. She serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of College
Student Development, NACADA Journal, NASAP Journal, and the Journal of the
Professoriate.
