Dr. Gary Crow

Professor and Department Chair

Gary M. Crow became Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at FSU in 2006. Prior to his appointment, he was a faculty member and department chair at the University of Utah and has held faculty appointments at Bank Street College in New York City and Louisiana State University, as well as a visiting professorship at the University of Reading in England. He received his Ph.D. degree in educational administration from the University of Chicago and has a M.S. in educational supervision and administration from Bank Street College of Education (NYC).

His research interests include work socialization of school site leaders, school leadership and school reform. Crow is currently conducting comparative research in England and the US on the socialization of school leaders in reform contexts. He has also conducted research and presented workshops on principal mentoring. His most recent book is Being and Becoming a Principal (w/Matthews, Allyn and Bacon), which identifies multiple role conceptions of principals and assistant principals. In addition, he and J. Matthews have co-authored Finding One's Way: How Mentoring Can Lead to Dynamic Leadership (Corwin Press) and Leadership: A Relevant and Realistic Role for Principals (Eye on Education). Articles authored by Crow have appeared in such journals as Educational Administration Quarterly, Journal of School Leadership, Journal of Educational Administration, American Educational Research Journal, Urban Education, and Educational Management, Administration and Leadership. He was founding editor of the UCEA Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership. Crow is past president of the University Council for Educational Administration and past secretary of AERA Division A.
