Rhodes Scholarship
In April, applications from undergraduates (juniors and seniors) and
graduate or professional students in appropriate areas will be
accepted for consideration by the FSU Rhodes Scholarship selection committee. Our
review process takes place in the spring; once a student receives
institutional endorsement, they may apply to the state Rhodes committee in the
fall of 2000. The scholarship covers study commencing in fall of 2001.
A Rhodes Scholarship pays for 2 years of post-graduate education at
Oxford,in England. Study can be at the BA or MA level in England, and many students
elect to study for a second BA. The scholarships are restricted by age--the
award holder must be no older than 24 years old at the
start of the award period, and must have already received a bachelor's degree
by October 2001.
There are 32 Rhodes scholarships awarded in America
each year, and it is a highly competitive, prestigious award. Applicants
must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, a concern for those in
need, leadership ability, and a commitment to athletic activity (varsity or organized sports are not essential; individualized athletic accomplishments are considered acceptable, and the range of accepted athletic
activities is extremely broad--in the past they have included ballroom dancing and working at Habitat for Humanity building sites).
Students who wish to be considered should have a strong background
in some area of the arts (not emphasizing performance), sciences, social
sciences, engineering, or law.
