Observed University Holidays

Faculty members are entitled to observe all official University holidays. No classes shall be scheduled on holidays. Classes not held because of a holiday shall not be rescheduled.

The following holidays shall be observed by faculty members as paid holidays:

  • New Year's Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr., Birthday (observed on the third Monday in January
  • Memorial Day (observed on the last Monday in May)
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day (observed on the first Monday in September)
  • Veterans' Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Friday after Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Day

If any of these holidays fall on Saturday, the preceding Friday shall be observed as a holiday; or if any of these holidays fall on Sunday, the following Monday shall be observed as a holiday.

Faculty members are encouraged not to perform duties on holidays; however, faculty members who are required to perform duties on a holiday shall have their work schedule adjusted to provide equivalent time off, up to a maximum of eight hours for each holiday worked. While on leave without pay, faculty members shall not be entitled to holiday pay. Faculty members do not record leave taken for an official University holiday on the Pay and Leave Report.

Faculty members who have performed duties on a holiday and terminate employment prior to being given time off shall be paid, upon termination, for the holiday hours worked within the previous twelve month period.

Religious Holy Days

Faculty members who wish to observe a religious holy day shall notify their department chair, academic dean or director as soon as possible in order that arrangements may be made for the meeting of classes and the performance of other scheduled activities. Faculty members who accrue annual leave must take annual leave for observance of religious holy days. Faculty members who do not accrue annual leave may seek an adjustment to their work schedule. Developmental Research School (DRS) faculty members must use a personal leave day for observance of a religious holy day.
