Data Analysis

Do you have the data you need to complete your research projects?  Do you have problems handling your data?  Do you have problems processing your data?  Do you need expertise on data management?  If you have these or any other data-related problems, we have the answer.

The Center's Data Analysis Unit specializes in services related to the use of data in social science, education, and health research.  Our assistance and consultation include, but are not limited to:

•

Data handling: the Data Analysis Unit can locate appropriate data for research projects, convert data from one format to another (e.g. SAS, SPSS, Systat, Minitab, Access), create backup of data files, catalog data files, extract and merge data files, recode data, and reconfigure data layouts.

Data analysis: we can use statistical software (e.g., SAS, SPSS), perform statistical analysis, and interpret and present the output of statistical procedures.

Research design: we design databases, determine measurement instruments, define coding schemes, evaluate sampling procedures, translate research hypotheses to statistical terms, select statistical methods and computer software appropriate for each research project.

Together with the Survey Research Laboratory, the Unit also provides assistance in writing a questionnaire that meets the stated needs, selecting question formats, and designing an analysis that will answer the client's research questions.  Since data analysis issues must be taken into consideration before a research project is executed, we recommend you visit us in the designing phase of any project.  To schedule an appointment, please call us (644-7394) or fill an online appointment form.  If you have questions about our services, please contact us or visit our FAQ page.

In addition, the Data Analysis Unit offers workshops and courses related to data handling and analysis.  The following is a list of workshops and courses directed toward graduate students who plan to conduct their research projects by using existing social sciences data or want to improve their computing skills.

    • Beginning and advanced SAS
    • Beginning and advanced SPSS
    • Data management and analysis
    • Data warehousing and mining

If you are interested in our workshops and/or courses, please contact us. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
